Fair Pay for Security Guards?

Security guards in New Zealand are celebrating their first-ever Fair Pay Agreement (FPA) after the Fair Pay Agreements Bill was passed in October 2022.

This FPA allows sectoral bargaining between workers and employers in the security industry. The union, E tū, initiated the process by submitting over 1000 signatures from security guards across the country. FPAs empower workers to negotiate for better pay, working conditions, safety, and training collectively.

It's a significant win for workers' rights and marks a shift towards fair wages and dignified working conditions in New Zealand, addressing decades of inequality and slow wage growth. This move recognizes the importance of sectoral bargaining to improve labor conditions and prevent low-wage competition among employers.
